From the land of the Viking kings

GK was born in 1991 in Haugesund, a town of about 38,000 on Norway’s rugged west coast. This is where Norway began. Around the year 872, by tradition, the Viking king Harald Fairhair won the sea battle that united the chieftains into one kingdom. He is said to be buried at Haraldshaugen, at the edge of town, where Norway’s national monument stands today.

The first king

Harald Fairhair unites Norway. His burial mound in Haugesund became the national monument in 1872, a thousand years later.

North Way

The name of a nation

Across the strait lies Avaldsnes, Norway’s oldest royal seat. Its kings controlled the shipping lane along the coast: the North Way, Norðvegr, that gave Norway its name.

A fighter from the same coast

GK grows up here, learns to fight here and opens his own gym, Herjer MMA, here in 2015. Twelve centuries after the Vikings, he is heading west.

“I accept that I am in a wheelchair now, but I do not accept that my whole life will be.”

Who is GK? In 2013 he won the first season of “Norges tøffeste” (Norway’s Toughest), a physical competition series on NRK, Norway’s national broadcaster. In 2015 he took silver for Norway at the IMMAF European MMA Championships, then turned pro.

On 30 May 2021 he dove into shallow water on the Oslo waterfront and was paralysed from the chest down. A week later, from his hospital bed, he asked for a film crew. Years of filming became “Fighter”, a three-part series on TV 2, Norway’s largest commercial broadcaster, and a feature film shown at CPH:DOX, Series Mania and Zurich Film Festival.

He also took the City of Oslo to court over responsibility for the spot, and took the case all the way to Norway’s Supreme Court. Today he tells the whole story on stage, with humour, gravity and honesty.
